Principal's Message

Many things would have impressed the observer of our swimming carnivals. The fact that they were well organised was obvious and for this I thank the many parents and staff members who bring this about under the guidance and planning of Mr Brown.
The stars of the day are our students and they star in many ways. Some are superb swimmers and it is a joy to watch them slice through the water with seeming ease. I am even more impressed by the efforts of those children, who while not being so highly trained, still put in their best efforts to get to the other end of the pool.
What truly brings joy to my heart is watching relay team members cheer on and congratulate their team mates regardless of how fast they were in the pool. Their attitude shows acceptance of 'difference'; acknowledgement of effort; and good sportsmanship. Full credit and congratulations to those children who earned medallions but also to each and every one of our students who did their best. We are proud of you all. Our students' behaviour throughout the day was exemplary from the cheering, to their being where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there and their manners.

Once again I thank all the adults who played a role as an 'official' of some sort and all those who simply came and supported their children - I know they would have appreciated your presence and efforts to make the day as good as it was.
The Slow Reveal In the coming days the builder's fencing will come down and be replaced by a bunting border aimed at keeping everyone on the paths and off the rest until the plants and grass have taken root. The southwest gate, (the Nazarene Gate has a nice ring to it!) near the roundabout, will be available for use once this fencing is removed.
Best Laid Plans We always knew that a large wall, despite being attractive in its natural state, would attract the attention of some who seek recognition in perverse ways. Understanding this, all the limestone walls were coated with a 'sacrificial' protectant designed to make the removal of graffiti easier. Last weekend's experience was hugely disappointing but not unforeseen.
Many thanks to Dan Walsh, our Site Supervisor, who started removing the graffiti within hours of it being applied. Consultants from the company that supplied the coating have been providing further details on how better to address this and any future incidents.
Dan is quite a marvel in the way he has taken ownership of all issues associated with the build, in many cases going way above and beyond the what a lesser person might have said their responsibilities were. In fact all Focus Building workers have brought similar attitudes to the project.
Child Safety The scariest part of being a principal is not the one-off incident but pick-up time, every afternoon, at school.
Research tells us that primary school-aged children have underdeveloped peripheral vision, a tendency to impulsive actions and that moving vehicles and children are a recipe for tragedy. There used to be an advertisement that said, "The minute you save, could be your last." It was referring to speeding. What if it were, "The minute you saved could be a child's last."?
Our Kiss and Drive process is safe for children no matter the age and quick and efficient in terms of getting children and parents reunited at the end of the day.
Alternatively, parents can park their cars, come pick up their child from the school grounds and on the way back to the family car they have the chance for a chat about the day. They may even want to chat with their child's teacher.
Trying to save a minute, or even five minutes, is not worth the life of a child.
I have seen some children who have been instructed to wait down on the side of the carpark; parents who park illegally and irrationally in the belief that their strategy will save some seconds; parents who, while using the K&D, arrange for their child to get into the car somewhere other than the pick-up zone, and then want to overtake the cars in front!
Have we become so impatient that our own perceived interests overrule the need to consider the safety of others?
Good Friday is a reminder to us all. Good Friday is a reminder that sooner or later, life deposits us all at the cross. It is a gathering place for the world's sorrow, its wasted efforts, its tormented people, its unimaginable catastrophies and its utter silences. It is also a place of forgiveness.
"The first Good Friday gave Christians a focal point where they can direct their sense of loss. From His isolated position on the Cross, Jesus was all too aware of the reality of loss: betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter, deserted by His disciples and, seemingly, even by His Father which lead him to call out 'My God, My God, why have you forsaken me'. Unbelievably, in His time of greatest loss Jesus was able to utter the words of forgiveness: 'Father, forgive them….'"
"Sometimes in the midst of 'loss' we might need to forgive ourselves, take away the blame we feel that we did not do enough for a person who died or that God didn’t do enough to prevent a catastrophe. Maybe our anger towards another person who caused us financial loss or the loss of a friend or a loved one has caused our life to become bitter and soured. If this is the case, then maybe we should take our loss to the Cross, and, in due time, be inspired by the message of forgiveness that is always there."

LAP - EXPRESSION OF INTEREST We Currently Have Positions Available for OLG Students to Join LAP
You might ask: What is LAP? LAP is a student wellbeing program fostering learning success through a mentor approach. It is a student-centred and volunteer-based mentoring program designed to assist the specific requirements of a student in need via one-to-one learning experiences that aim to provide guidance and enrich their wellbeing and thus their learning.
It focuses on the wellbeing, emotional and social needs of students through the powerful and positive contribution of trained mentors. All LAP volunteers must complete training to participate in the program. They must have a valid Working with Children Card, follow the CEWA Code of Conduct and adhere to the requirements of Confidentiality.
We are fortunate to have many volunteers at our school that are happy to commit to supporting children that would benefit from one to one time for half an hour each week. This time may be spent setting goals that will then be worked on to aim for successful learning in the classroom, it may involve the child pursuing a hobby, they may participate in confidence building activities, there are many possibilities on how the time is used. It does not involve tutoring or extra time for completion of school work.
Potentially LAP:
- Develops positive relationships between students/mentors in a safe, one-to-one environment
- Builds confidence and self-esteem in students
- Supports the successful learning of students
- Promotes, encourages and values parent/caregiver and community commitment and participation
- Fosters and strengthens parent/caregiver and teacher relationships to benefit students
- Creates a genuine, supportive and positive school community
Please contact Nerida Hince via the email below if you think your child would benefit from participating in LAP in 2018. Participation is voluntary, and the sessions may be ongoing, long term or short-term support/help.

—— OLG Newsletter - P & F Communication ——-
As my first official communication as P & F President, I’d like to say it’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to work with some very loyal and committed parents wanting to make a valuable contribution to creating the best possible OLG environment for our kids and families. On behalf of the P&F Executive Committee and all parents I’d like to thank Darren Vile for his dedication to his role as P&F President over the last 3 years. Darren leaves a legacy as a result of his great work and his on-going support of the Executive Committee during this transition is greatly appreciated. The following 2018 P&F Committee is now officially in place to help all members...
President: Tony Papotto Vice President: Scott Sullivan Treasurer: Victor Retamal Secretary: Fran Downey Events Coordinator: Amanda Doherty Parent Class Rep Co-ordinator: Juliet Taylor
We held our first P&F meeting for 2018 last week which was extremely positive and productive. Thank you to those parents for their attendance and it was fantastic to see a good representation across all the year groups. We can only continue to encourage and welcome new faces to all our meetings this year.
Remember every parent is already a member of the P&F so please make a special effort to be well informed of what’s happening within our school and make your voices heard!
Thank you also to all of the families that make a continued effort in volunteering in one way or another in the various aspects of the school and its community – at the end of the day it is for our children and they certainly love seeing us being involved!
The 2018 Events Calendar is in the final stages of being confirmed and will be distributed shortly. Stay tuned for upcoming key dates, in particular the OLG Family Picnic Open Day (including a Scavenger Hunt for the kids) which is scheduled for the evening of Friday 6th April, 2018.
If anyone has any feedback, ideas or suggestions on how we, as your P&F Committee, can create a better 2018 P&F experience please feel free email us on: exec@olgpf.com
Easter Egg Hampers
It’s that time of year again, when we celebrate Easter with family and friends. It is also a chance for us to help those who might be alone or not able to afford Easter. Bring the donations straight to the office or leave in your child’s classroom. Anyone who is free to help put them all together, please contact me on carolynhalleen@iinet.net.au we will do this on Thursday 22 March, in the morning after school drop off in the MPA, your donations and help is very much appreciated. “OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grand-parents are encouraged to run with the kids and have fun.
We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focused during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children.
OLG Run for Fun is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and has now commenced. The more parents, the more fun! OLG Run for Fun will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for fun.
As the club is run by volunteer parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip for all students must be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend.
Days: Every Tuesday and Thursday morning Start time: 7.40am to 8.15am (volunteer parents will then walk kids to school) Where: Meet at the south east corner of the football clubrooms at Charles Riley Reserve What to bring: Drink bottle, sneakers and the right attitude Cost: Nil Commitment: None – simply come for a run if you want to have fun Parents: Please run with your kids, they (and you) will love having you involved Remember: Eat breakfast at home first or bring something to eat after the run. Volunteers: More parent volunteers are always required, please click on the link below to let us know if your available to help out during the sessions. OUR LADY OF GRACE NETBALL CLUB
What a wonderful start to our 2018 season we have had. It started on Friday 16/2 with our refresher clinic for the years 4, 5 & 6 with over 50 netballers keen to brush up on their skills. It was a great session and all the girls put in a lot of work & listened well to all the coaches. The following week saw the year 6, 5 & 4 teams participate in grading. We thank our independent graders that came along to help us with this process. They spoke very highly of the players ability and willingness to showcase their talents. I would like to thank all our volunteers who helped coordinate the 2 events. Without these wonderful volunteers we can not run these programs. Team announcements will be made via email after school on Wednesday 28/2. There are a few teams that still require coaches & managers. Without these, we can not register the team, so please consider taking on these wonderful & rewarding roles. Please email OLGNCpresident@gmail.com
Thank you Carly Thomson President, OLGNC

So, please don't hesitate to contact our Sponsorship Co-Ordinator, Angela Todd on angela_todd@outlook.com to obtain some extra information.
On behalf of the OLGNC Committee, thank yu for your continued support.
