Merciful God, You called us to yourself in Baptism. Be with us as we begin our forty day Lenten journey. Watch over us as we learn to care for others, as we try to bring peace in our world, as we remember the poor who we have a responsibility to help. We ask this in Jesus’ name who lived and died for us and rose again.
Student Leadership It is with great pleasure that I publish the the names of those Year Six students who have been chosen by their peers to be student leaders in 2018. After a day and a half of team building and leadership activities at Ern Halliday Camp the group elected their Head Girl and Boy, who are:
Bronte Begley Noah Rowley
The students then chose the Ministry they wished to belong to for the first semester and in those groups elected their Ministry Leaders for the next six months.
Ruby Quigley, Noah Rowley
Steven Carr, Maggie Comerford
Mily Johns, Sebastien Low
Josephine Harding, Bailey Allen
Indiana Simpson, Danielle Vile
Brady Lamont, Nathan Taylor
Then last week the Year 4, 5 and 6 students gathered in their factions to elect their Captains and Vice Captains for 2018
Zep Sciberras, Kyle Sloan
Congratulations to each of these students and also to the broader group of Year 6s for the mature approach they took in selecting their leaders.
OLG has a good relationship with the Parish, which is very fortunate seeing as they allow the school to use their driveway for drop-off and pick-up via the Kiss and Drive method. Even when the church parking bays are all taken by aging, and sometimes frail, parishioners, our students can be safely delivered to the school gate. It does not work well for those parishioners when they find that school parents are using the ‘church’ bays for their own convenience resulting in 85 year olds having to walk long distances to get to church.
There are over 400 car bays surrounding the school, belonging to the City of Stirling. The grassed area just to the north of the church also belongs to the CoS. Please use only the marked bays and not the grass. CoS Rangers will be requested to patrol this area at for drop-off and pick-up times if the issue continues.
Parent cars on the left are on CoS land and on the right they are using parish car bays.
"Patience is the ability to maintain self-control when something disagreeable happens. It is a virtue and it can be a gift, but, for most of us, it is a skill that has to be developed. Arnold Glascow tells us that, 'The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.' How we, as parents, control our irritation and anger, teaches our children about managing their own feelings and relationships. Raising children doesn’t mean raising our voice as well. Unfortunately, children don’t come with instructions; but even if they did, would we find the time to read them?"
"It seems that each new generation causes pain to the one that gave them their existence. When we are being tried by our offspring: 'How about some study!' 'Have you tidied your room yet?' 'Can you turn that music down, please!' we might cast an eye over our shoulder and glance appreciably at our parents and be certain that our own children, later in their life, will do the same."
School Bus Timetable Changes Transperth now picks up our “bus children” at 3.00pm each day. I understand that this results in a short wait at the next school on the run.
The Change in Status of Pre Primary In 2009 the entry age to WA schools changed by 6 months, so that now PP children are just 6 months in age behind where Year One children used to be. A few years ago, with the introduction of the Australian Curriculum, PP became full-time and compulsory. In addition, Year 7 moved to secondary school. Each of these changes were made to bring WA into closer alignment with school systems in the Eastern states (and because secondary students are funded far more generously, by the Commonwealth, than primary school students.)
In many respects PP became what Year One once was – the start of formal, compulsory learning. The curriculum demands of the old Year One were now, more or less, imposed on PP. At OLG we remain committed to a ‘learning through play’ approach for our PP children, while understanding that by the end of the year they need to achieve certain levels of literacy and numeracy. They are taught by Early Childhood qualified/experienced teachers using age appropriate pedagogy.
Congratulations to the students who received merit awards at the last assembly.

On behalf of the North Beach SVDP Society I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks for the generous support offered by the school community, especially over the past Christmas period. With the donations and sacrifices made in providing for others this enabled us to distribute Christmas hampers to over 50 families in our region. This in the main provided a little unexpected happiness to families that are struggling to maintain their basic needs and dignity let alone contemplate a Christmas most of us take for granted. Again on behalf of those you have assisted we offer our heart felt thanks.
