The MPA certainly had a work out towards the end of last week! The OLG Fathers' Day Breakfast is just getting bigger and better in terms of the number of attendees and the food. It is a marvellous, community-building event and full credit goes to the P&F and the mothers who made it happen. Thanks must also go to those students who worked in the serveries and to Father Mark for his very apt blessing. That same afternoon the Grandparents' Day crew moved in and rearranged the furniture to meet the purposes of Friday morning's event. Again, we came together for a celebration and community-building happening that continues to grow and shine. The choirs were the best we have had perform on GPD with the ballad of "Mary of York", with its three soloists, being a standout. Those instrumentalists who performed demonstrated the strength of our instrumental music program. For many, a real highlight was the duet performed by Mr Scaglione and his grandson, Thomas Scaglione. After the entertainment had finished a number of grandparents told me of their interest in performing with their grandchild. Perhaps this is the spark for a future grandparent and grand child eisteddfod in future years! In case no-one noticed, the sound and lighting in the MPA was professionally handled by members of the Communications Ministry, and they were truly up to the task. GPD is a celebration of the wonderful place grandparents have in family life as well as generally showing off the work of our students, with the 'show' pieces being in the field of the Arts. In addition to the musical performances we were treated to the Fabulous Fives' dance act, a creative, high energy performance with a message, presented by all 60 Year Five students. Then there was the Visual Arts exhibition! Somewhere in the school, be it the library, the MPA or in classrooms every child had at least one piece of high quality art displayed - and much of it was stunningly good, especially when you checked the age of the artists. A veritable army of staff and parents are involved in bringing all this together for the day and I sincerely thank them for the hours they put into it (almost all of the staff time came from volunteers working unpaid and after hours). Again I thank the P&F and its members for their committed support of this event. As the grandparents slowly left the school members of the OLG Netball Club moved in to once again rearrange the furniture for their Annual Wind-Up event. OLG is most fortunate to be located adjacent to so many community sports clubs, which offer our students many opportunities. Neither netball nor basketball clubs are present in that very close proximity. Such on-site clubs typically have far greater success in encouraging student involvement in sport that off-site clubs. This year we have something like 12 netball and 12 basketball teams playing under the school name and colours. If those teams were not school-based I daresay less than half those children would be involved in those sports. Both organisations are professionally run by dedicated parents acting as coaches, managers, etc and it is such a worthwhile pursuit. Whether a child goes in to play at a high level or not, matters little. Team sports are a great way to make friends and find a place in a community. The Wind-Up was a great success and the children were excited about it. On their behalf I thank all those parents and the OLG Netball Club Committee for their dedication and efforts throughout the season.
Building Works Our Early Childhood Staff and Melisa Wendt have met to begin refining the plans for the nature play area that will sit in the courtyard created by the three new buildings. Building One is at 'lock-up' stage and has those staff members who have checked it out, excited.
Tournament of Minds Our Social Science and Science Technology teams perform in the State Finals at ECU Joondalup with presentations at Sacred Heart College this Sunday. I wish them well!
Last year OLG adopted a policy of interviewing and offering places in Kindy six term in advance of commencement. This was in response to Newman College doing the same. Other surrounding Catholic schools have now adopted the same policy.
The result is that OLG and some others are currently conducting their enrolment interviews for the 2019 Kindergarten intake.
At OLG we also combine this with interviews for the 2018 Pre Kindy classes. Parents interested in their family becoming part of the OLG school community by having their child in our 2019 Kindergarten class must register their interest and book an interview now. Phone the school office on 6241 9500.
Special Needs will be holding a cake stall in the multi purpose area on Friday 8 September. Please come along and help support their fundraiser. A reminder to the parents who will be baking for the cake stall that OLG has a Nut Free policy.
Now is the time to check your summer uniforms are in order for commencement for Term 4. Tuesday 10th October.
Knitting Club is after donations of 8 ply wool. Please drop donations at the library. Thank you.
Lost a large rainbow coloured umbrella in school grounds a few weeks ago. If found please hand into the office. Thank you.

GRANDPARENTS MORNING TEA
The grandparents morning tea was held on Friday, 1 September 2017, on the first day of Spring- how fortuitous! Once again it was a spectacular success. It had everything. The well coached and directed choirs sang a few beautiful tunes delivered with angelic voices and the solo performances were a real treat. We were also entertained by budding violinists and by a flautist, Olivia Todd, who showed her musical skills by playing the flute so sweetly. However, one of the highlights was when one of the grandparents and his grandson sang a famous Italian song “ Funiculi’, Funicula’’, followed by a thunderous applause from the appreciative audience. To finish, the dance group displayed their talents with abundant energy and fervour. We congratulate all the performers who contributed to an unforgettable day for all the grandparents who came along. After which, the grandparents were rejoined by their grandchildren who escorted them to the respective classrooms where we witnessed some splendid efforts by all the students. We recognise the fabulous work that the OLG teachers are doing with their students. It is no wonder that OLG has become one of the best Primary Schools in the Western suburbs. We thank the teachers and the Administration for their dedication and efforts in providing a high standard of education in a Christian environment. May God bless you all! See you next year. Nonno Nick. A very proud Grandfather to Ame’lie Russell. 4G.
Parents and Friends Association
Thanks to all those who attended the Fathers Day breakfast and Grandparents day last week. They were both great successes. The biggest thanks however go to the many volunteers who gave of their own time to make these happen. We are truly blessed to have wonderful people like this within our school community. To celebrate the end of year, the P&F are organising a social event for a Parent catchup. Make this your end of year class function.
Parents Social Evening & Silent Disco: Friday 13th October in the MPA starting from 7:30pm Don’t be put off by the fact that it is Friday the 13th but come and enjoy the P&F Social function of a parents end of year catchup and Silent Disco night. Please note: This is a social event NOT a fundraiser. Your P&F will heavily subsides the event with platters of food and extremely reasonable prices at the bar. So refer details below or the notices that have been placed on Flexibuzz to getting your tickets ($10pp). Make it your classes end of year get together.
There are only three P&F Meetings left for the year. It would be great to see some more new faces at some of these. Also at the end of this year three positions will become vacant due to the rollover of the 3 year term in any one role. So we are seeking expressions of interests from parents for the following P&F committee positions:
• P&F President (Chair the monthly P&F Committee meetings during the school year) (Currently held by Darren Vilé) • P&F Events Coordinator (This can be shared between a couple of people. It’s a co-ordination role and management of the P&F Events Calendar) (Currently held by Di Guttridge) • Class Rep Coordinator (Currently held by Linda D’Vaz)
If you wish to find out more please speak to one of us or email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will forward the relevant contact details. These are very rewarding positions.

Father’s Day Breakfast A big thank you to all the volunteers for all your efforts: pancake making, egg & bacon cooking, setting up on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, serving, cleaning up etc. We can’t thank all our helpers enough; particularly Sascha Low, whom also had Grandparent’s Day the next day to coordinate; Helen’s mum, Maureen, all the way from Tassie again this year; our adaptable & amazing BBQ team; teacher Jacquie Hardwicke & her IT team; students from Year 6 and Year 5 whom helped; and the list goes on.
